Bags of Belonging

For older adults, the Y provides vital support, including help applying for Food Stamps, Medicaid, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), along with services that empower seniors to live safely and independently in their homes. The Y also offers door-to-door transportation and culturally relevant meals that reflect the rich diversity of its community.

This semester, Pieces with Purpose has partnered with the Washington Heights Y to create 120 reusable tote bags for seniors in honor of National Senior Citizens Day. These bags are more than just practical—they’re a gesture of care and connection, helping recipients feel part of a larger community. Each bag includes small, thoughtful gifts such as hand lotion, pens, and a notepad for grocery lists and everyday reminders. Bags were handed out over multiple events including a trip to the Holocaust Museum.

About the Washington Heights YM&YWHA

Established in 1917, the YM&YWHA (Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association) of Washington Heights & Inwood — affectionately known as the Y — is Northern Manhattan’s premier Jewish community center. It serves an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population, enhancing quality of life for people of all ages through innovative programs and essential social services.

Everyone is welcome at the Y.
